Proposed water rate hikes will affect local business     

The city’s recently announced proposal to raise water rates by 20 percent over two years has many residents and businesses concerned. There are a number of reasons why water rates increase over time. Carrie Mattingly, utilities director for the city of San Luis Obispo, will help us understand the primary reasons for the proposed rate increase, what locals can expect now and what the city is proposing for the future.
 
Sexual assault task force to review Cal Poly culture   

Accusations of sexual assault are a delicate issue. The need for victims to feel safe to come forward must be balanced with the protection of the rights of the accused. When three cases of rape involving Cal Poly students were reported to police in the span of a week earlier this month, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong launched a task force to examine the campus culture regarding sexual violence and alcohol abuse. Rachel Fernflores, the task force spokesperson, will talk about the complex issues of sexual violence, the under reporting of it, the culture of drinking in society and balancing the rights of the accused.   
 
Going green saves businesses some green     

For many companies, sustainable business practices and cutting resources may seem like a daunting task. Now more than ever, companies and organizations are finding ways to make the task that much easier. Eric Linkugel, manager of PG&E’s energy solution and service, will tell us about different incentives and rebates that are available for businesses that make efforts to become more sustainable and cut resources in everyday operations.
 
Lunacy Club takes on historic feat     

The Lunacy Club LLC, a local group of investors, purchased the historic Granada Hotel Building on Morro St. in downtown San Luis Obispo earlier this spring and have begun to retrofit and restore the property. Previous owners planned to demolish the historic building. Kimberly Walker, head of The Lunacy Club LLC, will tell us how the process is shaping up and what the group plans for the building's future.
 
International Choral Festival   

Energetic and accomplished singers from every corner of the world will come to San Luis Obispo this June to compete for the coveted International Choral Festival awards. Shows are expected to sell out for the California International Choral Festival & Competition, which brings to life the power and passion of the universal language of music and has become one of the regions cultural treasures. Enjoy a sampling of what they’ll offer with a special performance.   
   
Legalities of social media for business  

Do you use social media as a business tool? Many businesses do and their commercial use of some social networking websites may actually be in conflict with that site’s terms of use. June McIvor, a partner at local firm Sinsheimer, Juhnke, Lebens & McIvor, will tell us some of the issues that companies need to keep in mind as they navigate and use social media.
   
Musical theater helps start the day right   
 
PCPA Theaterfest kicks off its 47th summer season in Santa Maria and Solvang with a great lineup of shows, including Broadway hit “Hairspray.” Guest performer John Keating, will give us a sample of PCPA’s musical excellence.
