Now that he’s been on the job for nearly two months, he’ll share what it’s been like to transition from Michigan State University to Cal Poly, what he plans for Cal Poly’s future, and how he hopes to build strong relationships with the community on economic development initiatives.

Tribute to Jane Russell

Legendary actress Jane Russell's recent death shocked the world. She was more than just one of Hollywood’s leading ladies and sex symbols in the ‘40s and ‘50s – she was a mother, an enthusiastic philanthropist and a Central Coast resident. Russell’s daughter-in-law, Etta Waterfield, will share her fondest memories in a tribute to the movie-star mom who was so much more than just a pretty face.

The Solvang resident will inspire and energize you to get involved in community service, and provide tips on how to give back and make a difference in your own community and the world.

TOPGUN Maverick in our own backyard

When most people think of Top Gun, what usually comes to mind is the campy 1986 film about macho students of an elite US flying school. But that movie was based on a real US Navy program, and Los Osos resident Hal Schmitt can tell you all about it. He served two tours as a TOPGUN instructor, and became the Navy’s air-to-air training expert, completely revamping the tactics to meet current threats, and delivering hundreds of hours of training and discussion worldwide. He still travels every two weeks to train oil rig workers on safety procedures and was instrumental in training BP oil rig workers after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill devastated the Gulf of Mexico last year. Schmitt will share his adventures and explain how TOPGUN training tactics can be beneficial in any organization or business.
