Crude realities of the Gulf Coast crisis
Today, dark pockets of crude and black sludge line the Gulf Coast as thousands of gallons of oil continue to leak into the once vibrant waters and delicate ecosystems. Even if BP's new oil cap successfully stops the leak, millions of gallons of oil have already spewed into the ocean. Marine biology expert and Cal Poly professor Mark Moline, Ph.D., will discuss the possible long-term effects of the spill on marine life and the environment in the Gulf, what we can expect to see and how the crisis could affect the Central Coast.

GPS from the man who started it all
You can find out where you are, where you’re going and how to get there at the click of a button, thanks to Bradford Parkinson, a pioneer of the Global Positioning System (otherwise known as GPS). The retired Stanford University professor envisioned GPS in the 1960s and, with air force colleagues, made it a reality by the mid-1970s. He’ll tell us how it all started, how GPS is used today, how its applications have evolved and what the future holds for GPS.

Now, on the cusp of his retirement, Baker will reflect on his years at Poly and in the community, the changes he saw, and what he hopes the future will bring.

Want to donate? There’s an app for that
Have you ever had trouble deciding which charitable organization to give to? Now, there’s an iPhone application that allows users to make micro donations, a small monetary amount, to a new featured charity every week, with information about who receives the donation and how it will be used. PocketPhilanthropist’s co-founders Nathan Moyer and Shaun Hong will speak about how the recent devastating earthquake in Haiti sparked the idea and how the two young businessmen used their vision to provide people with a simple, secure way to donate using mobile phones.

Will space be our next frontier?
For about a decade, the California Space Authority (CSA) has engaged in the preliminary concept development of a California Space Center. The $219.5 million project’s chosen location is at the edge of Vandenberg Air Force Base, one of the nation’s two premier launch facilities. Andrea Seastrand, the CSA’s deputy director, will tell us about the project, how the CSA expects to complete it by 2021 and how this new center will enhance the area’s economy.

The modern sounds of SLO
The Modern Music Academy has been making musicians in San Luis Obispo since 2003, including RedSkunk Jipzee Swing Band, which features two Modern Music Academy graduates, Molly Reeves (vocals and guitar) and Ken Davis (drums). This group of young Central Coast musicians produces a surprisingly mature sound that draws from Django Reinhardt, ‘30s European jazz and American roots traditions. Come hear these talented players and enjoy a spontaneous, spunky and exceedingly entertaining show.
