A Shake-Up Call?

China’s devastating earthquake reminded Californians – again – about the potential disaster such an event could cause here. Tony Garcia, an associate professor of geology at Cal Poly, will give us an expert’s view of the Chinese temblor. He’ll also provide some facts about the faults beneath the Central Coast and the chances of seismic activity here.

Tying the Knot, or Not?

The California Supreme Court’s ruling last month enabling same-sex partners to wed has been hailed as a breakthrough by some, while opponents wasted no time putting a measure on November’s ballot that would nullify the opinion. We’ll hear Michael Beck, president of the local Gay and Lesbian Alliance chapter, talk about the controversial decision and its aftermath.

(Y)our Tax Dollars at Work

It’s been more than a year since the half-cent sales tax increase approved by San Luis Obispo voters went into effect and there is more interest than ever about how the city’s additional Measure Y money will be spent. City Administrative Officer Ken Hampian will give us the latest information on Measure Y’s impact on city finances and on the daily lives of residents.

Wrestling with Adversity

National champ Matt Azevedo competed in the Olympic Trials earlier this month and came up just short of making the U.S. wrestling team that will travel to China later this summer. Azevedo, who lives in Atascadero and is an assistant wrestling coach at Cal Poly, will provide a glimpse of the demanding training schedule his sport requires.

Imagine That

“Is it open yet?” Parents have become familiar with that question ever since the new San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum began taking shape. Excitement has been building as its completion approached. Well, the wait is over, and just in time for summer. Roy Mueller, the museum’s executive director, will give us an overview of the exhibits and talk about what makes the museum such a special place.

These Cats Stray -- Musically

Pinpointing what kind of music we’ll hear isn’t easy with Tres Gatos, a Central Coast band on this summer’s lineup for Concerts in the Plaza. That’s because they serve up a unique blend incorporating elements of surf, blues, funk, punk, chunk, ‘60s’ psychedelic, garage-abilly…even flamenco. Yeah, flamenco. They’ll be playing July 25 in the Plaza.
