It’s a wonderful life

At age four, when Russ Levanway contracted spinal meningitis, his doctors told his mother she should immediately institutionalize him because he would likely be deaf, blind and mentally retarded. She rejected that, and now he’s the owner of TekTegrity, a successful local technology company. Russ will explain how his mother’s persistence unlocked his life potential.

A new day at the VCB

The San Luis Obispo County Visitors and Conference Bureau has spent much of the last year finding a new direction and reassessing its role in area tourism promotion. The recent selection of well-known and respected local businessman John Summer as Executive Director is reflective of a “this is a new day” spirit at the VCB. Summer will outline how he’ll accomplish this turnaround.

Turmoil at the County

It’s been a turbulent time at SLO County government with severe budget cuts, the Edge-Wilcox scandal, and poor employee morale. Board of Supervisors Chair Bruce Gibson will tell us how the Board plans on getting the County moving forward again.

The “Manhattan Project,” San Luis Obispo version

Recently the Mission College Prep Robotics Team produced a vehicle—dubbed Manhattan-- that successfully competed in the International Remote Operated Vehicle Competition coordinated by the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center. How do local high school students learn how to design and make something that can remotely save sailors trapped in a submarine? We’ll find out.
