San Luis Obispo is a nationally recognized hub of health care excellence and is known for its superb quality of health care. In fact, two of the largest employers in the city are the amazing hospitals located here. They provide important primary jobs, the foundation of any community's prosperity.
Hospitals are not just places for sick people. In many communities, they represent economic stability, a major source of community employment, and an important staple for many other businesses and jobs.
The American Hospital Association reported recently that one in every nine jobs in the U.S. is due to the existence of hospitals.
According to the US Department of Labor:
As one of the largest industries in 2008, health care provided 14.3 million jobs for wage and salary workers.
Ten of the 20 fastest growing occupations are health care related.
Health care will generate 3.2 million new wage and salary jobs between 2008 and 2018, more than any other industry, largely in response to rapid growth in the elderly population.
Most workers have jobs that require less than four years of college education, but health diagnosing and treating practitioners are highly educated.

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center is the largest private employer in the City of San Luis Obispo and the second largest private employer in the County. The hospital is a 164-bed, acute-care provider of tertiary services that has been serving the Central Coast of California for the past 50 years.
Since that time the hospital has grown into a leading provider of high-level medical services in San Luis Obispo County and has added many advanced services as the community has grown and today houses the County’s only neurosurgery program, high risk pregnancy program, has the County’s only dedicated Pediatric Unit as well as the only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit between Santa Barbara and Salinas.
The Birth Center at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center provides a comprehensive range of obstetric and infant services. The center includes labor-delivery-recovery (LDR) suites and a community-level newborn nursery. The hospital also offers comprehensive, patient-centered, family-oriented care for patients with cardiac disease, neurological disorders, orthopedic surgeries, spinal cord and brain injuries, stroke and arthritis.
Through its affiliation with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Sierra Vista has been selected “The Choice of Cal Poly Athletics.” As a tertiary referral center, Sierra Vista provides services that most other hospitals don’t and has five services that are exclusive in the county:
