Dalidio opponents soon to be revealed by FPPC

Four years of speculation about who was really behind the 2006 “No on J” anti-Dalidio project campaign will soon be over. In a story first reported by Calcoastnews.com, the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) will on Oct. 14 release the names of those who funded Responsible Community Development, LLC, a limited liability partnership that the FPPC found was formed just to fund the anti-Measure J activities. Until now, the LLC had fought hard to keep the names of its funders secret. The commission is expected to levy $80,000 in fines against the LLC for 16 counts of voter fraud. Measure J was an initiative to allow the 131-acre mixed-use retail, housing, ag and open space development to proceed in the county after city voters had narrowly rejected the project in 2005. Measure J passed in November 2006 with a 65 percent favorable vote.

A taste of Europe in old Muzio's shop

Cal Poly business grad and local entrepreneur James Whitaker is set to open Nov. 1 with a European style used book store and coffee shop in the old Muzio’s location on Monterey Street. Kreuzberg Book Bar and Coffee Lounge’s concept is one that Whitaker discovered while living in small neighborhoods throughout Berlin for two years. The shop highlights the fun and funky spirit that Whitaker enjoyed while running his SLO businesses from abroad. Along with coffee and books Kreuzberg will also offer food options, lounge-style seating, and entertainment.

Firefighters join fight against Measure H

The threat that the passage of Measure H could pose to public safety response times has many public safety officials endorsing the No on Measure H campaign. Impartial analysis from the City Fire Department estimates that public safety response times could be up to two to three minutes slower in parts of the city if the measure is passed. Now, the SLO City Firefighters Local 3523 has joined in the fight against Measure H to allow Prado Road to be finished as planned. They agree that Prado Road is a critical third connection needed between South Higuera and Broad streets. The union joins other Measure H opponents like San Luis Ambulance, which responds to the Fire Department’s more than 3,200 emergency calls in the city annually, and former SLO Police Chief Jim Gardiner and former SLO Fire Chief Bob Neumann. View the full list of Measure H opponents.
