Cal Poly President Warren Baker announces his retirement
Baker, 71, has served as president for 30 years, and is the second longest serving Cal Poly president after Julian McPhee. During his tenure, Cal Poly has achieved national recognition for the superior quality education it provides in the sciences, engineering, architecture, business and agriculture. For the past 17 years, U.S. News and World Report magazine has ranked Cal Poly as the best public masters university in the West, and in 2009 the magazine ranked Cal Poly 6th overall in the magazine’s list of western public and private masters universities. Also this year, Forbes magazine named Cal Poly one of America’s top colleges and universities. The university is expected to turn away more than 30,000 qualified applicants for admission this year.
Insiders report that Provost Bob Koob, an experienced administrator who was brought back to the university last year, will play a key role in the transition to the new president.
It’s expected that Cal Poly faculty, staff, alumni, students, the City and business community will all play a role in the selection process for the new president.
